Underfloor heating works by heating an entire area from the floor up, either through warm water pipes or electric elements installed beneath the floor covering. This method provides radiant heat that helps warm people and objects rather than the air. This often results in lower thermostat settings compared to traditional heating methods due to how evenly the heat is distributed across rooms.
Wet and electric systems both have pros and cons and choosing the right one for you may depend on your project. Wet systems are generally more complex to install but tend to have lower running costs, while electric systems are much easier to install but can become less efficient for heating large areas.
Underfloor heating can save you money on bills, but it depends on several factors such as the type of system you have, insulation, general energy usage and the type of boiler/heat pump you have. Wet UFH can have higher installation costs but their long-term running costs tend to be lower than traditional heating.
There are many flooring types that are great heat conductors, meaning they work well with underfloor heating. This includes laminate, vinyl, tiles and engineered wood. That being said, UFH is also compatible with carpet if it does not insulate from the heat too much.
Underfloor heating installation costs will vary based on the type of system you choose and your chosen flooring. Retrofits also tend to be more costly compared to new builds. Costs for wet systems can be anywhere between £85/100 per m2 (£95/100 retrofits) and electric systems £50/75 for new builds (£60/85 retrofits).
