The XPS 400 low profile overlay boards provide a simple solution for installing underfloor heating without lifting your floor. The panels are secured onto the existing floor making them ideal for retrofit installations.

Made from extruded polystyrene (XPS), the XPS 400 has a thermal resistance of 0.571 m²·K/W. The boards are compatible with all floor coverings, including laminate, carpet, tiles, vinyl, and engineered wood.

Overlay boards are 600mmx1200mmx20mm and have a compressive strength of 400 kPa. They provide a durable and efficient solution for retrofitting underfloor heating systems. Each board houses a 16mm pipe spaced at 150mm intervals and features pipe channels, 180° turns, and return channels. The panels are secured with adhesive, easy to cut, and simple to install.

The overlay boards feature a 200-micron thick aluminium foil, which enhances heat distribution across the floor surface, enabling heat-up times as quick as 30 minutes.

Key Features:

  • Low Profile: The 20mm design ensures minimal height increase on existing floors.
  • Durable: With a compressive strength of 400 kPa, the boards can withstand heavy loads without compromising performance.
  • Foil-Coated Insulation: A 200-micron aluminium coating optimises heat distribution and system efficiency.
  • Easy Installation: Pre-grooved channels (spaced at 150mm) simplify installation and pipe routing.
  • Versatile Compatibility: Suitable for use with laminate, carpet, tiles, vinyl, and engineered wood floors.
  • Efficient Heat Distribution: The aluminium foil maximises heat output and comfort across the floor.

Installation

The installation of low-profile underfloor heating overlay boards is a straightforward process. This involves cutting the boards with a saw and fixing them using glue. Attention to detail during installation is crucial to ensure proper fitting of the system. For comprehensive guidance for our Installation guide.

Floor Preparation

  • Boards are fixed to any solid surface; the subfloor must be dry, level and clear of dust & debris.
  • A floor levelling compound may be required if the floor surface is uneven.

Board Layout

  • Transitional boards are used in areas of high pipe density.
  • Boards are installed lengthwise following the direction of the pipes.
  • It can be useful to lay all of the panels on a dry floor to find any potential issues with the layout before fixing the panels
  • Begin laying overlay panels in the corner of the room, ensuring tight edges against the walls during placement.

Cutting

  • Boards can be cut easily to allow for seamless installation around obstacles.
  • Use a craft knife or insulation saw to cut boards.
  • Transitional areas, additional corners, 90° bends and extra pipe channels can be cut from full boards.
  • A router can be used to cut new channels within the boards.

Fixing to floor

  • A contact adhesive will provide a secure bond to the subfloor. Ensure the adhesive is free from all chlorinated solvents as this would damage the board.
  • Spray adhesive is recommended as it provides quick and strong bonding of boards to concrete and wood. Available in 500ml spray cans and 22ltr canisters for use with a spray gun.
  • Porous surfaces may require an additional coat to be applied to the underside of the overlay boards.

Laying Pipe

  • Ensure all boards are fully secure and all pipe channels are free of any debris.
  • Refer to the layout drawing continuously when laying pipe runs.
  • Carefully walk along the pipe pushing the pipe down into the straight pipe channel with the sole of your foot.

  1. KP

High density backing with a strong aluminium reflective barrier. Pipe grooves well formed and simple to bend in the coating using the handle of a Stanley window scraper. Boards cut well with a Stanley Knife but you will need a 19mm router bit to create extra channels. PS I am not promoting Stanley it is just in this case they were the ideal tools.
