Measuring for underfloor heating

Measuring for underfloor heating is easy and can be completed in as little as 10 minutes using a tape measure, notepad, and a pen.

Room Size

Calculate the area by multiplying the length and width of the room.
Area (m2) = Length (m) x Width (m)

Top tip: If the room is an odd shape, divide it into smaller sizes and add these together.

Unheated Area

Measure any unheated areas in the room and again calculate the size.

Unheated areas include fixed elements such as kitchen units/islands, fitted wardrobes & fireplaces.

Total Heated Area

Subtract the unheated area from the total area, giving the total heated area. This ensures you don’t overestimate your project and spend more on unneeded materials.

Total – Unheated = Heated Area

Other considerations

Are there different heated zones?
If there are multiple zones repeat this process for each area, each zone will need a separate thermostat. When measuring for underfloor heating, ensure to account for all zones.

Thermostats and controls.
Think about the number of thermostats required for the installation. Wet underfloor heating may require additional controls including actuators and a wiring centre. When measuring, take into account where controls will be placed. Contact us to find out exactly what you need.

Measure the depth available.
This will allow you to ensure the installation matches the desired finished floor level. Consider the height of the heating system, insulation, screed, intermediate layers, and the final floor covering. Ensuring the finished floor level matches your requirements is essential for a seamless installation when measuring for underfloor heating.

Next Steps

Measuring Electric Underfloor Heating

Measuring correctly for electric underfloor heating is crucial, as the heating wires can’t be cut or trimmed.

  • The correct size of the mat should be 100mm from all sides for optimal performance.
  • Ensure you purchase the appropriate size without overestimating.
  • To quickly estimate the required mat size, use 90% of the total heated area.
  • If you provide us with a floorplan we will work out the correct size of mat or cable you require.
  • Remember to choose an electric underfloor heating thermostat.

Measuring Water Underfloor Heating

When installing in a single zone, you can use our single-zone underfloor heating kits. If you want to estimate your underfloor heating materials, we have a blog that walks you through the steps.

Send us a floor plan!

You can send us your floor plan and we will provide a materials estimate for your project. We create our estimates based on your measurements. Find out what we need below.

Layout for an underfloor heating quote

VPS generate an underfloor heating quote from your project measurements. Technical CAD drawings in PDF format are preferred, but we can also work from images. If you do not have a technical drawing, a detailed sketch will also suffice.

Please include

  • The dimensions for each room, include any features such as alcoves.
  • Rough positions of doorways.
  • Unheated areas with dimensions to indicate their placement within the room. (eg. Kitchen units, fireplace)
  • Location of the manifold if known.
  • Room names.

You can sketch this on paper or on a computer. Ensure that the drawing is clear and easy to understand. Proper measuring ensures that your underfloor heating layout will be accurate and effective.
